Nobody asked her to. There was no occasion, no birthday, no condolence to soften. She just showed up at the door with that blue pedestal vase and an armful of everything the garden had going on that week: red roses still deciding whether to open, an orange bloom that couldn't pick a lane, pink poppies leaning into magenta, a teal flower that had no business being that color and knew it.

She set them on the yellow plaid cloth like it was the most natural thing in the world. Because for her, it was.
